"Dirty" birds? (1 Viewer)

Hummer-crazy
For a lot of the months of July and August, I've been seeing "Dirty" birds. That is, hummers with a lot of dark grey smudges on the breast and flanks. Upon taking some photos, I can see that someof these smudges are gaps in the feathers where the surface pinfeathers haven't fully opened yet. On others though, it seems that these dark grey smudges are actually darker-pigmented feathers.
One of the females that has been here since April had these dark smudges, as well as some dark throat spots. Could it be possible that these dark smudges are passed down? Are they common to Ruby Throats?
