irruption and early migration? (1 Viewer)

samuel walker

It's OK to be a little blue........
We have seen an irruption this Summer of ruby-throated hummingbirds. Throughout Ohio folks have posted 10-15 birds at feeders and I have witnessed large numbers in the wild. The birds, who usually remain until the end of September are now mostly gone. One local birder put forth the theory that the large number of birds competing for flowers moved up the southern exodus this year. Anybody else seen the hummer irruption or, irruptions leading to early migration in other species?

I am seeing a large number of hummers here, too, in northern Pennsylvania. They have been around most of the summer, so it doesn't seem like a migration issue. A good number are still around despite the cooling weather.
