I am told that when making a box to drill a few small holes in the base. And yet Shop bought Boxes do not have any?
What is going on here?

I drill holes in the bottom of my larger boxes (for Owls etc) but not the smaller ones, if you make sure the box is cleaned out at the end of the season dont think it's really necessary for Tit boxes etc.

Hi Free

I make quite a few nest boxes and i have modified them a bit over time. I no longer drill a series of holes in the base but when I am constructing the base I cut each corner off, as it were, to create gaps at each corner. I think it good practice for any box as like others have said it is not just about waste from the birds but water ingress which then can disperse much easier.

All my tit and Robin boxes have a gap in the base and they came from my local hardware and pet shops. In fact i find the gap quite handy as i am able to look up into the box and see if there is any nesting material inside!

I got a GCSE in Woodwork but my corners still don't meet. So that solves that problem then. :t:
Infact my Daughter calls them 'frank Spencer' bird boxes :-C

I guess there is nothing perfect about the growth of a tree. I always find "hen Pen joinery" an art hard to achieve so I ain't judging!
