bird in deciduous woodland...singing from high up in a tree. It looked like a blackcap in shape and size but wasa deeper brown..and appeared to have to same colour all over. Its song started off a scratchy chattering..jumping the scale frequently and went into a final small flourish. It was soon repeated.
Any help.....it probably wasnt a blackcap?

Sounds like a garden warbler, the often sing from hard to see places and have the same overall appearance as black cap the song sounds quite thrush like at times if this helps.

Sounds like Garden warbler, when seen this birds best identified by the lack of any real markings no supercillium, grey brown all over etc.Hope this helps.

I agree, probably a Garden Warbler. The songs really are quite similar, but the birds can't be confused once seen.
