Sigma 800 f5.6 vs 300-800 f5.6 (1 Viewer)

Hi all, anyone know if there's a comparison report anywhere between these two beasts? I'm looking at buying one or the other and my instinct is to go for image quality on the prime but would like to know if it is really better.

There are reviews of both lenses in the equipment review section -
the 800 f5.6 gets a fairly poor review

while the 300-800 f5.6 fairs much better...

Gavin,

Check out Fredmiranda.com for reviews on the 800 f/5.6 lenses:

and the 300-800:

The nod appears to go to the 300-800. It would get my choice, as well...

Good luck,

Jerry

Gavin,

I don't have any experience of either lens but if you have a look at www.suesbirdphotos.co.uk a large amount of her photos are taken with the 300-800mm. This should give some idea of the results that can be achieved with this lens.

Regards,

Gavin,
I know nothing about the 800mm Sigma. I do know that Romy (Liquidstone) gets outstanding results from the Sigmonster. Add to that that he shoots many of his shots in the jungle and I have to believe this is one hot and longgggggg zoom.

Check out some of his Sigmonster pics and crops here.

Oh yeah, and I am green with envy :)
