I'm new to bird photography and I've been told that if I want to photograph birds on their nest I need to obtain a license.

My Questions are;

1 Is this correct?
2 If it is, does it apply to all species?
3 Where and how do you go about getting one?

Thanks in advance

The question I'd pose, is why would you want to photograph birds on the nest? They don't make for particularly photogenic shots, and neither do they sell that well.
Species that you may come a cropper on from a legal point are Barn Owl and Kingfisher, many others on the schedule 1 list are not likely to be viable subjects.

Thank you for this - most helpful.

As to the why - I'm fortunate in that I have access to secluded woodland with a healthy population of woodpeckers (spotted & green) which are my proposed subjects.

I'm not looking to sell my images at this stage.

The stable block I used to keep my horse, has swifts every year. The young come out onto the beams and line up. The colours are lovely.. I was going to try to get a good photo of them. The reason I would want one is you can get up close to them. to get a good close up photo. They are used to people tending to the horses. I did not know it was illeagal to photograph these birds. I Will just have to look at them without the camara.
I would want take a photo to preserve the memory and to look at with the rest of the photos of the other birds I have taken photos of in the garden.
