self-regulated song playback system (1 Viewer)

Hi all, I just stumbled across this forum while searching on the internet and you sound like an experienced bunch so here goes:
Anyone have experience setting up a self-regulated song playback system (for scientific research)? The idea is that I'll have a discman or mp3 player attached to small speakers, but that it will be regulated (power on, plus start playing) by a timer so that I don't have to show up at all my field sites at dawn to turn the things on! Ward and Schlossberg managed to set up a solar-powered self-regulated system for their work on black-capped vireos but they used boomboxes and car batteries, which is not really an option for me. All suggestions welcome!
