Hi Mike. There WAS an English language fieldguide, "Birds of Japan" (by Shinji Takano) published by kodansha but it's been out of print for ages. You can find it secondhand but to be honest it's pretty dated. A better bet is the current "Birds of Korea" published by LG Evergreen. It has over 95% of the birds you're likely to see (you can get a Japanese photographic fieldguide once you arrive to fill in the blanks).

It's well worth thinking of stopping in South Korea on the way in or out if time and resources allow- depends what species you are most interested in. Feel free to PM me if of interest.
