I have seen something similar to this growing on the ground or on wood and even up grass stems at a coniferous woodland near me, altough mine is brighter yellow, would like to know what it is (I'll try and get a pic sometime).

It looks rather like the illustration of Mucilago crustacea in Michael Jordan's fungus book. Beyond that I can't say. I tend to stay away from slime moulds on the grounds that I have no decent id guides.
