Goldfinches? (1 Viewer)

I recently puchased a place in SW Wisconsin and have noticed what appears to be juvenille goldfinches still at my feeder, I thought they flew south for the winter, they appear quite fat and healthy, but they are not the brilliant yellow of their parents which are long gone. Am I keeping them here by feeding them?

Well we have them in Jersey all year and in winter they go VERY pale and nothing like their breeding yellow. I suppose if the weather is right they could stick around where you are too.

By November they should be in their winter plumage which is much duller than the breeding plumage. They'll stick around as long as they can find food even in harsh weather. Once that wicked midwestern air arrives and makes it hader for them to forage they'll disappear.
