This was the only place on the trip were there was \b Sulphur-bellied Flycatcher\b0 or \b Plain-capped Starthroat\b0 ; also one of two \b Lineated Woodpecker\b0 sightings on the trip was here.\par \par \ul El Tapir Butterfly Gardens\ulnone (days 1 & 3): We made two brief visits to this hummingbird hotspot. The first we dipped on Snowcap, but were not disappointed since we had a nice male \b Black-crested Coquette\b0 . We also had a nice mixed flock blow through, which included the uncommon \b Black-and-yellow Tanager\b0 , as well as \b Emerald Tanager\b0 and \b Tawny-crested Tanager\b0 . On the second visit we connected with an adult male \b Snowcap\b0 as well as what was probably an immature male; also had \b Bronze-tailed Plumeleteer\b0 .\par \par \ul El Tigre Fields\ulnone (day 1): Made a short stop here and connected with both male and female \b Nicaraguan Seed-Finch \b0 (local in this area), two \b Green Ibis\b0 , and heard \b White-throated Crakes\b0 .\par \par \ul La Quinta de Sarapiqui Country Inn\ulnone (days 1-3): Our base for exploring Caribbean slope habitats. A nice, fairly large Inn, though the single rooms were small, but had AC. Highlights here were being awakened by \b Howler Monkeys\b0 in the morning (never saw them though) and a pair of \b Spectacled Owls\b0 near one of the cabins, which provided nice scope views and even mated while we watched them. Also had, on the extensive grounds, \b Chestnut-collared Swift\b0 , \b Orange-billed Sparrow\b0 , and \b Bronzy Hermit\b0 , all of which were the only sightings of these species on the trip. Other notable sightings included \b Chestnut-backed Antbird\b0 and \b Rufous-winged Woodpecker\b0 .\par \par \ul La Selva (OTS)\ulnone (day 2): Highlights included \b Sungrebe\b0 seen on the river from the bridge near the station headquarters; three sightings of female-type \b Snowy Cotingas\b0 ; good looks at \b Olive-backed Quail-Dove\b0 , \b Great Tinamou\b0 , nesting \b Chestnut-headed Oropendolas\b0 , \b Double-toothed Kite\b0 , \b Great Curassow\b0 strolling the station grounds, and three \b King Vultures\b0 soaring over the station.\par \par \ul Braulio Carrillo National Park--Quebrada Gonz\'e1lez station\ulnone (day 3): We only spent an hour-and-a-half here. The guides warned it can be either terrific or very quiet. Unfortunately, it was the latter this time. However, we did pick up our only sightings for the trip of \b Black-headed Nightingale-Thrush\b0 and \b Carmiol's Tanager\b0 . I kept scanning for raptors overhead (since Hawk Eagles and others have been seen here), but only saw a flock of \b White-collared Swifts\b0 .\par \par \ul Cerro Lodge\ulnone (days 3-6): Our base for exploring Pacific slope habitats. A nice, charming, birder-friendly lodge, with a great view and good food. Also nice variety of mostly dry-zone birds. Highlights here were the only \b Muscovy Ducks\b0 (flyovers), \b Cinnamon Hummingbird\b0 , \b Steely-vented Hummingbird\b0 , and \b Pacific Screech-Owl\b0 (heard only) of the trip. Also had great looks at some \b Scarlet Macaws\b0 that stopped in nearby trees, a \b Ferruginous Pygmy-Owl\b0 , and \b White-throated Magpie-Jays\b0 at the feeders. Though as I have noted in another thread, the rooms here are certainly not insect-proof, and some had problems with ants and scorpions. (Management did graciously permit those with ants to switch rooms). It is kind of like camping out.\par \par \ul Carara National Park & vicinity\ulnone (days 4-5, including Guacimo Road & Waterfall Road & mangroves): Highlights were a stream where\b Red-capped and Blue-crowned Manakins \b0 bathed, \b Long-tailed Manakin\b0 , \b White Hawk, Green Shrike-Vireo\b0 high in the canopy, \b Greenish Elaenias\b0 , rare-in-Costa-Rica \b Yellow-bellied Sapsucker\b0 , nesting \b Royal Flycatcher\b0 , \b Crested Bobwhites, Mangrove Hummingbird, \b0 and 2 \b Black-faced Antthrushes.\par \par \ul\b0 Tarcoles River Boat Trip\ulnone (day 5): one of the highlights of the tour; great looks at \b Double-striped Thick-knees\b0 , \b Collared Plovers\b0 , \b Southern Lapwings\b0 , and \b Yellow-headed Caracaras\b0 . Also had \b American Pygmy Kingfisher\b0 and the expected \b Boat-billed\b0 \b Herons\b0 .\par \par \ul Rio Chirripo Retreat & Cloudbridge Reserve\ulnone (days 6 & 7): Explored Caribbean middle elevations here. Retreat was very nice, but again I at least had problems with bugs -- lots of beetles in my room. It's a big complex and crowded at this time of year, but it did have one of the few insect-proof rooms of the tour, and the rooms had very nice contemporary decor.
