Colin's Birding Diary - 16th December 2007

Posted Sunday 16th December 2007 at 15:27 by Colin
Forest of Dean on a cold and grey overcast morning with frozen ground along the tracks through the trees.

I walked to Farmers Green to see if I could find the Great Grey Shrike but had no luck. I moved on to New Fancy View watchpoint where I soon found a soaring Goshawk which came right overhead and gave close views. It gently ushered a Buzzard out of its path, caused many Wood Pigeons to rise from the trees and fly around in a bit of a panic, did the same to a small cloud of passerines on the distant horizon before being lost from view in about the same place of the forest canopy from whence it came. The only other sighting of note was a close fly by of 7 Common Crossbill.

I moved on to Cannop Ponds where 23 Mallard, 2 Tufted Duck, 2 Greylag Geese, 2 Mute Swans, 3 Coot and a Little Grebe were milling about on the north pond.
