This blog is intended to follow my progress this year in my pursuit of obtaining some worthwhile bird photographs.
Very much a beginner, with limited funds but almost unlimited time, I want to capture photographs that are more than mere record shots. I am not expecting many rare or even unusual species, but want to do justice to any bird that cares to pose for me.
Wish me luck and good light.

What a difference a day makes.

I'm a happy bunny today. First off, I decided to run a series of test exposures on my remote set up, as I have been frustrated by the results just lately. I was pleased by what I found. I can operate at 2000th second at 200 ISO and get well exposed images (with FP flash).
I set the camera up for the day and was rewarded with what I feel is a good photo of a goldfinch and an "action" photo of a greeny with its wing raised.
I'm very happy with the activity in the garden. It snowed again overnight, but the birds are surviving and I feel numbers are actually increasing. I saw a few more goldfinches today. Blackbirds are now numbering 6 and they obviously enjoy the grapes I put out.
What has really made me happy though, is the sighting of a male bullfinch in the apple tree at the bottom of the garden. He didn't stay long, and didn't visit the feeders, but it is the first I have seen in the garden for three years! Now, to get a decent shot of him would make my year!
If he does come back and doesn't visit the feeders much, I may have to get the hide out and sit out in the cold. Perish the thought!
It is costing rather a lot for seed at the moment, as I am filling feeders up twice a day - but do you know, I don't care. It is a joy to see so much activity and a nice warm feeling to think I am helping so many birds. No-one else around me seems to be feeding the birds, so it is important I don't stop.
With the weather as it is, I can't really go out much, so I am literally spending all day watching the activity in the garden. I am actually able to identify individual birds by their behaviour. There seems to be a hierachy within each species and between the species.
Obviously, I would like a few more species, but all in all, I am one happy bunny.
