This blog is intended to follow my progress this year in my pursuit of obtaining some worthwhile bird photographs.
Very much a beginner, with limited funds but almost unlimited time, I want to capture photographs that are more than mere record shots. I am not expecting many rare or even unusual species, but want to do justice to any bird that cares to pose for me.
Wish me luck and good light.

A day off for contemplation

I'm having a day off from photography today. Partly because I thought I had better help around the house for a change (!) and partly because I want to work out where I am going next with my photography.
On the whole, I am happy with the results I am getting, both technically and aesthetically, but at the same time I feel I need more variety.
So where do I go next?
Do I keep on changing backgrounds and perches and hope for something different to come along?
Do I take my setup to a new location?
Do I change my style completely and go stalking?
The thing is, I am not interested in merely getting record shots of different birds. I am a photographer first and a birdwatcher second. I like plain backgrounds and unfussy photographs. I suppose, to be pretentious, I could say that that is my "style".
Ideally, I think I would merely like a better variety of birds in the garden at the moment. When the weather improves a bit I can take my setup down the road to a very small nature reserve where I have permission to put up a feeder. That would give me not only different birds, but another challenge. It is still too cold though to sit in a hide for very long.
I think though, what is really the matter is that I am going stir crazy, stuck in the house all day. I went for a short walk yesterday to find some "new" branches, but apart from that I have not ventured out for a week.
It is raining at the moment and the snow is beginning to thaw, so perhaps tomorrow I might go out for a longer walk and take the camera.
Now, if the bullfinch I saw yesterday returned with a few friends, then I might have enough to keep me occupied for another week!
Till then , I'll visit the forums.
