Saw a Willow Warbler today. Inner-city location.
Think it was a Willow Warbler, but they're difficult to tell from Chiffchaff!

Willow Warbler or Chiffchaff?Hello there. This is my first entry on my first day on your site. My reason for joining is to ask all you experts, for I am not one, if you know what type of bird my wife and I see on our nut feeder. I've got about 8 books on birds but I can't identify it in any of them. The nut feeder is outside my lounge window so visibility against a bright sky background is not brilliant. Saw your observation re Willow Warbler and Chiffchaff and I think the Willow Warbler is the nearest but not the same.
Description;- About 7-71/2 inches long. There is a pair, what we think is the male is a sort of olive green on its chest blending into a light brown. No prominent colours. The female is mostly beige and light brown. Colours blend into each other smoothly. Shortish tail. Long strong dark beak. Flies in a straight line, quite fast, with no 'dipping' in flight. Has sleak smooth appearance. Its beak is longer and thicker than a Willow Warbler (according to pictures I've seen). Please.....any ideas? |

Well, Big-George202, I haven't got a clue what you've got visiting your nut feeder!
Best guess would be female blackbird and juvenile (but they would pick up from the ground or table under the feeder). Light can play funny tricks with bird plumage. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Common_Blackbird |
