I was running behind this morning, so when I realized as I got in my car that I forgot my binoculars, I decided to leave them behind. A block or so away from the office, I saw a couple of tree swallows and pulled off to get a closer look. I had already given up on timeliness and wished I had gone back for my binoculars after all. The swallows didn't stick around, but when I pulled into work, I saw a huge red-tailed hawk sitting atop a light post across the street and feasting on something meaty. He (I assume birds are male unless I know otherwise.) seemed to tolerate me watching him eat, but after a moment or two, a blue jay came screeching and diving in from stage right. It clipped the hawk's back with its feet, swooped back up and turned around for another go at him. I am familiar with a jay's hawk call, of course, but I didn't realize they would pester a hawk like that. The red-tail finally decided to find a more peaceful corner of the restaurant and made off for the trees, breakfast in talon.
