Very much a beginner, with limited funds but almost unlimited time, I want to capture photographs that are more than mere record shots. I am not expecting many rare or even unusual species, but want to do justice to any bird that cares to pose for me.

Is it really 10 months since I posted to this blog?
Is it really 10 months since I did much bird photography?
Well, I'm determined to put all that right over the next few weeks.
As I write this, my daughter and family have gone back to Belgium after spending Christmas with us, and the place seems very quiet. Not only the house, but the garden seems very quiet also. I do not have many birds visiting the feeders this winter. A few Goldfinches, one solitary greenfinch and the usual blackbirds, robins and collared doves. The long-tailed tits visit once a day and I was extremely surprised and delighted to see two goldcrests the other day, although they stayed in the tree instead of coming down to the feeders.
I have at last bought another flash - a Canon 430EXII. I can set both this and the Sigma up as slaves and I am presently working out flash positions and ratios. The idea is to use the flashes as the sole source of light. In this way I can operate at a very high speed (the flash duration) in any light. This is important as photographing small birds close up means that they move across the frame pretty quick. I also want to get more action shots instead of simply bird on branch.
I hope to be operational within a week and then - watch this space.
It's good to be back and this time I will continue into the spring and summer.
