I am getting ready to head for Minnesota on January 21, 2012. I have been on several trips up around Duluth, Minnesota in January. I have seen some birds which are not usually seen (some not seen) in Missouri. This year I would like to target three (3) species, BOHEMIAN WAXWING, SPRUCE GROUSE & BOREAL OWL. I have been watching the Minnesota listserve and the BOWA and SPGR seen to be in "short supply". The BOOW is not even being mentioned in the various field trip lists. But, I can hope!

Well, I "dipped" on my three (3) target species, but it was a fun trip up to the north country anyway. We did get to see three (3) owl species: a SNOWY OWL was in the harbor area in the city of Duluth, and in the outlying areas we were treated to both the GREAT GRAY and the NORTHERN HAWK-OWL. The RUFFED GROUSE and SHARP-TAILED GROUSE were nice to see. Other northern specialties were BLACK-BACKED WOODPECKER, COMMON and HOARY REDPOLLS, RED and WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILLS. We also were treated to some unexpected birds like VARIED and HERMIT THRUSH. Some other species which I observed which I have not seen in Missouri this year were: AMERICAN BLACK, DUCK, NORTHERN GOSHAWK, NORTHERN SHRIKE and RED-BREASTED NUTHATCH. Some gulls seen in the Duluth Harbor were: GLAUCOUS, LESSER BLACK-BACKED, GREAT BLACK-BACKED and THAYER'S.
