11/24/08 - Carlos Avery WMA and O'Brien State Park

The forecast was bad, so I didn't make any big trip plans, but the weather was actually frustratingly nice. I wanted to go North to St. Croix State Park, but the bad forecast scared me off. I took a look at nearby Carlos Avery WMA, near Forest Lake. It's a large wetland complex, with a network of open wooded islands and ridges among the bogs. It could be a good area to visit in the summer. Unfortunately these habitats are abandoned in the winter. After lunch I went down to the St. Croix River...

... what's missed is mystery.

Absolutely horrible, miserable day in Trieste. Cold, driving rain with snow up in the Karst above the city. Yuck. Not a lot of news on the living bird front, though there is a Pink-footed Goose (Anser brachyrhynchus) with the Greylag Geese (A. anser). Sixth record for Italy (if accepted).

Didn't make a lot of progress today. Lots of odd weaver birds and no really good book to help me sort them out. I may put away all the Ploceidae until...

Tales of a Botanical Birder

Posted Monday 24th November 2008 at 16:25 by brianfm
22nd Nov. I can confirm that there were no brass monkeys out on my patch today. There were bright skies, but it was bitter cold and a thin layer of snow lay in patches on the ground. The thick blanket of cloud which had lain along the east coast yesterday had brought snow as expected. I decided to have a walk before kick off at 3.00pm as this type of weather often brings winter thrushes onto the patch and it was I felt a good idea to clear the head before the goals against tally mounted at Chelsea...

11/23/08 - Minnesota Valley NWR

Posted Sunday 23rd November 2008 at 21:05 by bkrownd
I slept in this morning to try to shake my sickness. Didn't work. Morning was overcast and foggy, so I wouldn't have made any big expeditions anyhow. I set out without a real plan, and ended up at Minnesota Valley NWR. Lyndale Avenue first, then Bass Ponds. Weather improved nicely in the afternoon. Predictably, I saw lots of common birds. The most exciting part was trying to get better photos of American tree sparrows. At one point there was a very loud bird on the opposite bank of the river,...

11-23-08

So, i used to be a birding buff. About a year ago, i could always be found outside with my beloved canon 20d. Then i became busy with school, sports, homework, and weightlifting, and my bird photography hobby became a thing of the past. My backyard is full of over a dozen empty bird feeders, and they have been that way for awhile.

Winter used to be my favorite time of year to feed the birds, so this year i think its time to refill the feeders and take my camera out of its case for...
