Bird news from Hungary, December 2009 (1 Viewer)

The weather has been fairly mild throughout December, which meant the flocks of Red-breasted Geese were all around Eastern Hungary and quite a few Lesser White-fronts were also reported.

There were good numbers of wintering Alpine Accentors and Wallcreepers in the country and sightings of Snow Bunting and Twite were increasing.

There are at least 3 Great Spotted Eagles wintering in Hungary and they were regularly observed at their traditional sites.

Before Christmas the first cold wave hit Hungary with a lot of snow. Consequently many geese left Hungary although there are still a few Red-breasts around.

On 29th December a White-winged Snowfinch was found in a castle in Slovakia about 50 metres from the Hungarian border. On 31st it was then seen entering hungarian air space thus becoming a first for Hungary and number 401 on the Hungarian list (excluding introduced species and escapes).
