Well, I have not figured out how to identify the hawks that I have been seeing lately. Due to distance and other factors (being new at it), I am not sure what I have seen. I do wish I would've gotten a picture of the one that flew across Ralph's pasture today because it had a large wing feather sticking straight up and I guess about to be shed. It glided low but for a long ways.
Yesterday, there was one perched in a tree and the breast looked rust colored, the belly looked white, and the closed wing looked dark brown and white making it sort of striped looking. In the same area, I saw another bird gliding toward the ground. I think another hawk. Eventually, I will learn to identify them. For now, I can only say that I am seeing more hawks lately during this cold winter. A couple of weeks ago, I saw one soaring that had a white bar near the wing tips. It was suggested that it was a red-shouldered hawk, but I am not sure. Maybe by the end of the summer I will have better luck identifying hawks and get some photos of eagles since we do see them near our rivers.
