Bird Food for the American Goldfinch (1 Viewer)

Bird Food for the American Goldfinch
The American Goldfinch is a fast flying, yellow bird common in many North American backyards. It is a member of the finch family. This bird is fairly easy to identify – it is a small bird, with a heavy and conical shaped beak and yellow plumage. It is commonly found from the southern portion of Canada and through most of the United States north of the Gulf Coast states.

Welcoming the American Goldfinch

While the Goldfinch can be extremely easy to lure into your backyard with the right bird feeder and bird food combination, you may also want to consider sunflower, aster, and thistle plants for food and some shrubs and trees for nesting. The American goldfinch is primarily a seed eating bird. However, it will eat other foods as well, depending on the availability of food in the area. It will eat:

• Thistle seeds
• Dandelion seeds
• Ragweed seeds
• Sunflower seeds
• Alder seeds
• Mullein seeds

Most other seeds are tolerated as well. Most common bird feeders will work well for this particular type of bird because they are happy feeding from hanging feeders, platform feeders, or even on the ground. If you hope to keep these birds coming back, offer nyjer seed in their food supply.

These birds are social in terms of eating but only before or after the breeding season. However, keep these feeders full. If the American goldfinch's supply of food is not replenished often enough, the birds will move on to wherever they can find a stable supply of bird food.
For the beginner, consider purchasing a tube bird feeder and filling it with bird food that includes sunflower seeds or nyjer seed. The key is to offer them enough food and to keep it there on a regular basis to ensure your birds do not leave.
