This blog is intended to follow my progress this year in my pursuit of obtaining some worthwhile bird photographs.
Very much a beginner, with limited funds but almost unlimited time, I want to capture photographs that are more than mere record shots. I am not expecting many rare or even unusual species, but want to do justice to any bird that cares to pose for me.
Wish me luck and good light.

Flight Photography

Posted Friday 15th June 2012 at 14:17 by Denny Woodthorpe
I have set myself a new challenge now that I am getting good results with my static portraits of garden birds.
I now would like to get better photographs of birds in flight. There are two methods I intend to try. The first is tracking birds in flight with my 70-300mm zoom lens and the other is to use flash to capture small birds in my garden set up.
I have one or two decent images using the "tracking" method, but they are limited to larger birds like the red kite and woodpigeon....

Bored in Belgium

Posted Monday 14th May 2012 at 11:59 by Denny Woodthorpe
I'm spending the week in Belgium, babysitting for my daughter and son-in-law who are away in Venice! I have my camera here and they have a decent garden, but with four(!) cats, it is a brave bird that ventures to the feeders.
I am just going to sit out in the sun to try and practice my flight photography as there are several magpies flying to and fro. A blackcap flew into the hedge yesterday and I heard a cuckoo quite close last night, so this area would be a great place to do some serious...

Nothing Doing

Posted Friday 27th April 2012 at 14:34 by Denny Woodthorpe
It is probably a bit pointless posting to my blog when I have nothing to report, but I am feeling really fed up and need to "vent my spleen" in some way.
Reasons?
First of all, it is raining and has been all day.
Second, there is no real activity to report at the feeders in the garden, so even if I decided to put plastic bags over the flash units and sat out in the garden shed for a while, I would not have much to photograph except a few bedraggled Goldfinches....

Long billed blue tit!!!

Posted Monday 26th March 2012 at 15:45 by Denny Woodthorpe
Wow oh wow!
I am writing this as I sit in the garden shed, photographing the birds.
I have just seen - and photographed, the most amazing bird I have ever seen! Nothing less than a long-billed blue tit! Yes, really. It obviously has a deformed beak, but it has also obviously learned to live with it and feed successfully, as it could not have happened suddenly, but must have grown over a considerable time. The upper bill is the longest, being over a centimetre in length, with the lower...

New backgrounds

Posted Thursday 1st March 2012 at 20:01 by Denny Woodthorpe
I've come up with a new way of producing backgrounds for my bird portraiture in the garden. I became fed up with daubing paint or pastels on to boards and it not looking quite right. I then had the idea of actually photographing appropriate backgrounds (out of focus) and having them printed out as A2 posters. I sent eight of them away to be printed. Well, they have come back and I tried a couple out today and they worked great! I have found a way of mounting them on a board so that I can change...
