Richard Carden was visiting Shenzhen and wanted to see White-eared Night Heron and Blyth's Kingfisher. He also hoped to find Silver Pheasant so I asked a friend of mine if we could travel up in his car to the resereve. Gaofeng Zhang kindly agreed and made all the arrangements at the hotel. It was to be my second visit to this wonderful reserve and Goafeng's fifth. We had very little time as Richard had to retrun to Singapore on the only flight Sunday evening at 1930.He was also unable to leave earlier than 12.40hrs on Friday due to business committments. However we set off with the weather threatening to be unpleasant all weekend and arrived at the reserve at about 18.30hrs.I decided it made sense to stop off at the upstream site for the WENH before checking into the hotel as light was fading fast. We were very lucky as we had one bird fly over our heads just before dark. The water levels in the river were far too high all weekend which made finding WENH and Blyth's Kingfisher difficult but in the end we had six bird sitings of the Kingfisher probably 3 adults and 1 juvenile. A bonus for Richard and I was finding on two occasions White-necklaced Partridge (7) new birds for both of us. No Silver Pheasant were seen and I suspect that at this time of the year they are deeper in the forest. We didn't look for Cabot's Tragopan but I intend to do so in the Spring along with Elliot's Pheasant which has recently been recorded in the reserve.I shall make another trip early in the winter. The two images are of Blyth's Kingfisher and Papilio Krishna, a stunningly beautiful common local butterfly
