Dance of the grebes (1 Viewer)

Spring is the perfect time to watch different aspects of bird behaviour here at WWT London Wetland Centre. Many species are claiming territories and nesting sites and will soon be incubating eggs.

One of the most elegant spring bird rituals is the aquatic courtship dance of the great crested grebe.

Great crested grebe are distinctive for the extraordinary crest which surrounds their head and their extravagant courtship ritual. This pair very obligingly performed on one of our pools in Wildside recently, giving our visitors some fantastic views.

Photographers Anne and Chris Algar captured these amazing shots: see the grebe photos on the WWT website

Hopefully over the next few months we'll also be able to see stripey grebe chicks being carried on their parents' backs!
