Pileated Woodpecker 2/15/2014 (1 Viewer)

I am thrilled to have seen a pileated woodpecker today here in Missouri. I only briefly saw it in flight and described it to my husband. He said it was a wood hen. He is not into bird watching but has always heard it called a wood hen. I looked it up on the internet and learned that it is a pileated woodpecker. I am hoping to get a better look at it tomorrow, but I do not know if they nest and stay in a small area or if it roams a lot day to day. It would be fantastic if I can get a picture. We have crows in the front yard a lot right now, so at first I thought it was a crow, but the wings had white and it flew totally different than a crow. From the description in my field book, it was a pileated woodpecker. What bugs me is I didn't have the right angle as it was in flight to see its head! Leave me with just a touch of uncertainty.
