Serendipity

Posted Sunday 4th November 2007 at 00:00 by Chris Benesh
Ah, another case of birding serendipity. Yesterday, my email box contained a couple of messages about an odd bird that had been seen on a golf course pond in Casa Grande, Arizona. The first message began like this:

A fellow just called in to TAS and I answered the phone (my mistake) he told me he lives in a motorcoach and tours the country, is a birder with a good sized lifelist.

While playing a round at Casa Grande he spotted a bird he couldn't ID. His description"

Chengdu Birding – Chengdu, Sichuan the gateway to Tibet.

In fact, I found three of them, including one that was quite large. I'm not sure which is the one I got the photo from. An interesting thing I observed is that the trees with more branches had much smaller leaves. None were flowering, but there were some buds on one that I'll have to watch in case it's fruiting.

I also...

Posted Monday 7th July 2008 at 08:07 by bkrownd
I did my first volunteer work day at Pu'u Wa'awa'a. It's a two hour drive each way, so I can't go there often. Pu'u Wa'awa'a was cited by the early Hawaiian botanist Rock as being the richest forest in the Hawaiian islands, in terms of plant species. Since then, nearly 100 years of ranching and illegal logging have ravaged the area. It isn't as barren as the ranch leases that ring Mauna Kea and across the Waimea Plain through North Kohala, but the environmental losses are still staggering. ...
