A Taste of the Future?

I have always wanted to see a Little Egret. This is not a terribly easy wish to fulfil in Scotland, but I noted with interest that one appeared to be wintering at RSPB Loch Leven. With this in mind, I jumped at an opportunity to go birding there last Saturday.

Arriving at the reserve, an enquiry at the visitor centre revealed that the bird was still around, and had been seen the previous day. Although I was desperate to see the Little Egret, I was also here for the birding in general,...

Knowledge and Expectation

We all make a big deal about our knowledge, or gen. Whether its about a particular species, or a particular area, 'gen' is one of our most valued commodities. But what happens when this knowledge turns the hope of a good day out into the expectation of a good day out? Is a little bit of knowledge a dangerous thing?

Take last weekend. Boss- chick had allowed me free rein on the saturday to have a full day out. I set my sights on Musselburgh and my first trip to SCotland's east...
