Separating Baird's and White-rumped Sandpipers.

Posted Sunday 29th June 2014 at 23:01 by Rick and Elis
If, like us, you've always thought that telling a Baird's from a White-rumped Sandpiper was nigh on impossible and only for the experts, then this blog may help you. Although we haven't seen these species in all plumages (notably not juvenile Baird's), we think that now we have cobbled together enough experience and knowledge to tell the difference, so, here's how we do it.http://www.waderquest.org/2014/06/se...te-rumped.html

Exciting times ahead - the waders are coming!

Posted Saturday 21st June 2014 at 23:48 by Rick and Elis
I know it is mid summer and most northern hemisphere birders are not thinking yet about autumn migration but if you happen to be a male Buff-breasted Sandpiper or a female which has failed to breed, you may well already be on your way south...http://www.waderquest.org/2014/06/ex...mes-ahead.html

Wader Quest; New Project

Posted Friday 13th June 2014 at 12:46 by Rick and Elis
Magellanic Plovers are little studied and understood, there is no clear picture about their population size and whether or not the perceived decline in their numbers is due to a change in habits or a genuine decline. http://www.waderquest.org/2014/06/wa...w-project.html

Wren family first outing.

Posted Monday 2nd June 2014 at 17:39 by Rick and Elis
There has been a lot of racket around our house today. The sound of scolding wrens being chief among the causes. The reason for this noise? Chicks! It seems that the wren family is having its first outing. Mum and Dad are understandably anxious and the kids hungry.

New bird for the garden if not for the list... Jay.

Posted Wednesday 28th May 2014 at 18:33 by Rick and Elis
A Eurasian Jay visited our table today for the first time. Strangely though, it was intimidated by a Wood Pigeon that was occupying the table when it arrived and only came to feed when the pigeon had gone.
