Eurasian collared Dove and others

Posted Monday 11th May 2009 at 04:12 by canadagurl123
I went to Swan Lake this morning in Victoria to do some birdwatching before I volunteered there. In 3 hours I got 54 species including a first for me in my local checklist area: a Eurasian Collared Dove. This species range has expanded rapidly in the last few years. This makes my Victoria list at 275. Other highlights were the first Caspia tern I've seen on the lake and my first Warbling Vireo of the year. There was also a late Northern Shoveler on the lake. Also a Bittern was there. This the only...

Slaty backed Gull

Posted Thursday 15th January 2009 at 21:30 by canadagurl123
I was told on Sunday night that there was a rare Slaty backed Gull at Martindale Flats in Victoria. Martindale is great for rare birds but not usually rare gulls(thats what clover Point is for.) Since I didn't have any morning classes I took the hour long bus ride and another 20 minutes to get to the spot it was at. I noticed a bunch of birders i knew that had scopes looking at about 200 gulls. I was told it had flown of 20 minutes before I arrived. So i walked around the area for 3 hours with no...

Black throated Grey Warbler in December!!!

Posted Monday 8th December 2008 at 19:56 by canadagurl123
Well yesterday I went to Swan Lake to lead the birdwalk there. Just after leaving the bus stop there were Bewick's Wren, Anna's Humming bird, Robins, Kinglets and the usual birds. Just down the path there was a Varied Thrush that crossed the path. Only fourth one I've seen at Swan Lake. On the way to where the group meets there was also Hermit Thrush. Once at the parking lot we left for the main trail and there were tons of Towhees, finches, siskins and even several goldfinch. Goldfinch are irregular...

deformed hummingbird bill and dead Virginia Rail

Posted Monday 10th November 2008 at 16:15 by canadagurl123
Well yesterday was my usual Sunday birding where I lead the bird walks at the local nature Sanctuary Swan Lake. We only got about 40 species which is not great for me but compared to the Wednesday walks it beats it by about 6 species so maybe its just a bad week. There was a lot birds although making quite a bit of noise. This year the Northern Flickers are about double there average number. Also there was about 5 Virginia Rail calling. UInfortunnately there seems to be something that is killing...

New blog by Kirsten

Posted Monday 10th November 2008 at 16:04 by canadagurl123
Hey this is Kirsten Mills. I'm a birder from Victoria BC canada. Most of this blog will be about my birdwatching adventures around Victoria with the odd story about the Okanogan. I'm doing a big year this year for Victoria and I am at 239 species with the latest being a Rough legged Hawk at Elk Lake.
