Hmmm, I forgot I even had a blog!

Last April I snagged a used Siggy 500 4.5 EX (pre-DG). That was the single most mind blowing purchase I have made to date for birding. This lens really doesn't fail unless you miss the focus. What I mean is it is stupidly sharp and free of CA and scatter. Such a great lens. Even with a cheap 2x Kenko MC7 TC attached it can really pull in the details...WOW!

So, in the past year I have become increasingly less satisfied with my trusted...

Yesterday was the first successful Bald Eagle day for me since December of 2009. Although the eagle images are few, and lack detail, they were aided by some pleasant natural lighting. Several birds were captured in and around the grounds of Gillette's Castle, as well as a distinctly prismatic sundog off in the southern sky. The juvenile Bald Eagle was a pleasant surprise, flying by not minutes after I arrived at the edge of the cliff. Later that morning I walked Henry through the hills to the north...

Spring is coming...

2) American Robins are moving in! I have officially spotted several today, and for the first time this season....

New Sigma 150-500 OS

An early xmas present (thanks hun ) has made its way to the mount on my Rebel XT. Initially purchased for the 500mm fl, I'm quickly falling head over heels for the Optical Stabilization. I mean, WOW! Sigma claims 4 stops. I haven't found a way to measure this, exactly, but I have no reason to doubt the claim. I'm shooting handheld most of the time, with shutters down to 1/100, and still getting quality detail.

First Great Blue Heron

Since I picked up the 70-200 1:4 L for my Rebel XT back in January, I've been pushing the heck out of it for birding (despite the obviously "short" limitation of said lens). In that time I've had half a dozen encounters with great blues, but always at a distance.

All that changed on July 31st when I was getting ready for work. While putting on my shoes at the back deck, I saw the shadow of large wings in the distance, and ran inside for my camera, hoping for the best. After...
