Happy New Year

A vain effort to try and do a little birding on the New year's Eve, was met with cold winds and heavy snow and not much in the way of birds.

A few Long-billed Plovers huddled against the cold, a Kingfisher sat atop a small stick in the local neighbourhood looking for a stickleback or two, Daurian Redstarts darted through the undergwoth, briefly sprang out, before disappearing back into the undergrowth , Dusky Thrushes chacked chacked atop the winter cherry trees, Black Kites, herons,...

Winter is upon us

After the autumn migration died down in early November I concentrated on searching through the incresing number of gulls at their daytime washing site with limited results so far - 7 species in total- Vegae, Black-tailed, Kamchatka (Common), Black-headed, Slaty-backed, Mongolian and Heuglin's. No sign of any white-winged gulls, but some interesting hybrids and odd-plumaged birds. It was interestig to see the species status change over the past two months, as in October Black-tailed initially...

From dip to tick

News of a Baillon's Crake in nearby Yamaguchi Prefecture from the previous weekend made me think 3rd time is lucky, even though it had not been seen since Sunday.

So Saturday morning found me on an early bullet train to Southern Yamaguchi.

I arrived at the site, a shallow reed-fringed lagoon behind a seawall to find a strong wind and intermittent showers..not promising weather.

Many ducks were fresh in and among the commoner species were 5 Falcated Duck...
