One week is a long time in Birding

Posted Monday 22nd October 2007 at 06:18 by lostinjapan
Well it has been exactly one week since my last blog..and I have sinned...well birded.

The local patch proved quite fruitful last week with a couple of visits last week yielding a few goodies, the pick of the bunch being two new birds for Hiroshima Castle, a flyover Olive-backed Pipit and a long overdue Blue Rock Thrush hanging around the castle.

Other goodies at the castle in the last week, included Japanese Thrush, Short-tailed Bush Warbler, Middendorf's Grasshopper...

From the one that got away to not much at all!

Posted Monday 15th October 2007 at 14:43 by lostinjapan
This autumn has not been quite as exciting on my home patch of Hiroshima Castle as compared to last year.

Since my last post a little over two weeks ago, the passage has slowed down, with just the occasional Brown Flycatcher, Grey-streaked Flycatcher , Blue and White Flycatcher, and Arctc Warbler showing that passage has been occuring.

Quiet weekend..busy week

Posted Wednesday 26th September 2007 at 19:32 by lostinjapan

Yesterday found 3 Short-tailed Bush Warblers together, along with just 1 Arctic Warbler and 1 Brown Flycatcher.

Today was a little better with a Black-browed Reed Warbler, looking...

Dipped

Posted Friday 21st September 2007 at 06:37 by lostinjapan
Well

I made it out to the spot for the Baillon's Crake only to wait three hours in the hot sun and dip totally.

Fan-tailed Warblers semed to be buzzing from every rice ear.

There were a plenty of Common Snipe creeping around, with a few Swinhoe's Snipe thrown in and a lone Grey-headed Lapwing doing an impression of a confused Egret.

Plenty of real egrets - Little, Great, Intermediate and Cattle, as well as Grey and Night heron searching...

A Fall Day

Posted Wednesday 19th September 2007 at 11:29 by lostinjapan
I managed a quick look around Hiroshima Castle at lunch time today and was rewarded with a pretty good smattering of birds.

In the center circle bushes hopping and skulking were a couple of Short-tailed Bush Warblers, trying to blend in with the local Tree Sparrows.

Excited by this new birds frsh in I took a walk around and quickly found several other goodies, the first Grey-streaked Flycatcher of the autumn, 2-3 Narcissus Flycatchers including a resplendent male, a...
