This blog is intended to follow my progress this year in my pursuit of obtaining some worthwhile bird photographs.
Very much a beginner, with limited funds but almost unlimited time, I want to capture photographs that are more than mere record shots. I am not expecting many rare or even unusual species, but want to do justice to any bird that cares to pose for me.
Wish me luck and good light.

It is really annoying when you have the opportunity to get a shot you would really like, but fate gets in the way. Driving in to town this morning (shopping!) I noticed a bird in a hedge by the side of the road. A beautiful male bullfinch sitting in full view on a nice branch. I couldn't stop, even to point it out to the wife, as there was a car right behind - and I didn't have my camera with me anyway. For a while afterwards, I had the image imprinted on my mind.
At the moment my photography...

Lincolnshire was the coldest place in the U.K. last night - minus sixteen degrees! There had been a freezing fog in the night before it cleared and it left everything covered in a white hoar frost. It looked like a winter wonderland when I woke up, so I set the camera up with the remote and put the heater on in the conservatory. O.K. I was being a bit of a wimp, but there was no way I was going to sit out in the hide in weather still below freezing. I was pleased with the results, especially as...

Conditions are perfect for photography this morning. It snowed in the night, but the sun is shining now, so plenty of light. The cold weather has brought lots of birds into the garden, including a first - a Fieldfare has been feeding on the ground along with the Blackbirds. Unfortunately, I am busy with decorating and haven't the time to set up the camera and sit and watch. Bird numbers are at a high for this winter and I'm glad to see the Wagtail is surviving the cold weather. He commands the floor...

Well, we have the first snow of the winter. Not a lot, but enough to bring more birds into the garden. Lots of the usual suspects - Goldfinches and Starlings are the most numerous, followed by Blackbirds, Collared Doves, Wood Pigeons and Greenfinches. it is good to see a few Greenfinches, as I thought they had all succumbed to the virus.
I am also very pleased to see a visitor from last year again. The Pied Wagtail is back again. It would be a challenge to get a photo of him as he is always...

Well, I've at last found the time to post a couple of photos to the gallery. I am pleased with the results from a technical and aesthetic point of view. I just wish I had a few different types of birds to photograph. I am now working on backgrounds. I have bought some art paper and pastels and will try to create something a bit different from the one I have been using. I also need other perches, as it looks a bit obvious that the photos are taken in a "studio" when the perch and background...
