This blog is intended to follow my progress this year in my pursuit of obtaining some worthwhile bird photographs.
Very much a beginner, with limited funds but almost unlimited time, I want to capture photographs that are more than mere record shots. I am not expecting many rare or even unusual species, but want to do justice to any bird that cares to pose for me.
Wish me luck and good light.

Well, it's been well over a year since I posted anything on this site. For most of that time I have not done any photography, but just recently I have felt the urge and dusted off the optics.
I am mostly taking photos in the back garden again, but I am quite pleased with the results. I have solved many of the problems that plagued me in the past.
The really big improvements are with:
1. background
2. flash
3. hide
I will detail how I have improved...

Well, the good weather lasted all of one day! It is pouring down with rain - just when I was going to mow the lawns!
I had already decided to bring the hide down (ready for cutting the grass), and just managed to bring it in when the heavens opened.
That's the end of my little project in the back garden for a while. I set out to produce some classic images of bird on photogenic perch with a plain background and I'm reasonably pleased with the results. The main problem has been the...

Today has been a better day. The sun has shone for a start. This has meant I have not had to use flash, with all its problems.
I have been doing a bit of "inventing" and I'm happy with the results.
The problem was that trying to use a tripod in the hide was very awkward, with at least one leg getting in the way of the chair. This meant that I had to lean forward a lot, leaving me in quite a bit of pain after a long session.
I have solved this by making a little table...

Well, the grandchildren have gone back (miss them but my back is getting better!). The weather is not too bad and the shopping has been done, so I have at last had chance to do a bit of photography from my temporary hide.
I set a large green cloth up as a background (still not too happy about it) and hung a feeder up from a branch fastened to a fishing bankstick. I "hid" under a fishing umbrella covered with a large piece of camouflage netting.
The sun only shines in this...

Well, my new lens arrived yesterday lunchtime.
I didn't have a lot of time to play with it as I had to cut the grass - back and front! I was very happy with the way it handled and the "photographs" I took with it through the window showed that it was going to produce the goods.
This afternoon, I nipped out into the garden at half time in the FA cup semi-final. (WBA were robbed). A Dunnock was singing in the apple tree and I was able to approach to within about five metres....
