This blog is intended to follow my progress this year in my pursuit of obtaining some worthwhile bird photographs.
Very much a beginner, with limited funds but almost unlimited time, I want to capture photographs that are more than mere record shots. I am not expecting many rare or even unusual species, but want to do justice to any bird that cares to pose for me.
Wish me luck and good light.

Missed opportunities

Posted Monday 20th February 2012 at 16:16 by Denny Woodthorpe
It is really annoying when you have the opportunity to get a shot you would really like, but fate gets in the way. Driving in to town this morning (shopping!) I noticed a bird in a hedge by the side of the road. A beautiful male bullfinch sitting in full view on a nice branch. I couldn't stop, even to point it out to the wife, as there was a car right behind - and I didn't have my camera with me anyway. For a while afterwards, I had the image imprinted on my mind.

Cold cold cold!

Posted Saturday 11th February 2012 at 20:07 by Denny Woodthorpe
Lincolnshire was the coldest place in the U.K. last night - minus sixteen degrees! There had been a freezing fog in the night before it cleared and it left everything covered in a white hoar frost. Decorating gets in the way

Posted Friday 10th February 2012 at 09:53 by Denny Woodthorpe
Conditions are perfect for photography this morning. It snowed in the night, but the sun is shining now, so plenty of light. The cold weather has brought lots of birds into the garden, including a first - a Fieldfare has been feeding on the ground along with the Blackbirds. Unfortunately, I am busy with decorating and haven't the time to set up the camera and sit and watch. Bird numbers are at a high for this winter and I'm glad to see the Wagtail is surviving the cold weather. He commands the floor...

Snow!

Posted Thursday 2nd February 2012 at 10:01 by Denny Woodthorpe
Well, we have the first snow of the winter. Not a lot, but enough to bring more birds into the garden. Lots of the usual suspects - Goldfinches and Starlings are the most numerous, followed by Blackbirds, Collared Doves, Wood Pigeons and Greenfinches. it is good to see a few Greenfinches, as I thought they had all succumbed to the virus.
I am also very pleased to see a visitor from last year again. The Pied Wagtail is back again. It would be a challenge to get a photo of him as he is always...
