Having recently rediscovered the joys of birding for the first time since I was a wee lad, this is my record of getting to grips with re-familiarising myself with the world of birds.

Has it really been a year?

Posted Monday 25th June 2012 at 09:13 by Stoggler
A year since I last posted to my blog so there's a lot to cover.

Firstly a quick update on 2011. I ended the year with a British year list of 121, one short of the previous year's figure while my Sussex year list ended on 116 which was one better than 2010.

At the end of June 2012 I have already reached 117 on both my British and Sussex lists, already surpassing my Sussex year list best and just five behind my British year list best - I should easily pass that figure...

Back birding again

Posted Monday 13th September 2010 at 13:54 by Stoggler
It's mostly been a summer of cricket for me (watching, not playing!) and have not been birding much of late recently. I have been out on the occasional day but nothing really serious (although I did twitch a Hoopoe at Climping a couple of weekends ago).

All that changed this weekend though, and my, what a fantastic weekend it was too!

Up early Saturday morning and catching the train to Pulborough. Cue sitting in Nettley's hide for two hours to shelter from the rain...

Posted Tuesday 27th July 2010 at 12:14 by Stoggler
A day off work last week, so I took a trip to Pulborough and Arundel.

Arrived early at Pulborough and enjoyed seeing no one and having the place to myself for a couple of hours. Saw more bunny rabbits than I thought possible, some rather tame (or stupid) and didn't move till I got within just a few feet of them.

About 9.30 I made for the hide overlooking the north fields as I knew a huge shower was heading my way (thanks to my early warning system, a.k.a. my other...

Back in the birding saddle

Posted Monday 28th June 2010 at 09:13 by Stoggler
I have been rather quiet here recently, with little birding at the beginning of the month and so little to report.

Other than watching the swifts in my neighbourhood and keeping an eye on the nesting pair in my house, I didn't really go out birding for a couple of weeks, having been distracted by other activities (not least the World Cup and Twenty20 cricket matches at Lord's and the Oval), but Springwatch sparked the wildlife juices again and the last couple of weekends has seen...

Swift Mansions!

Posted Tuesday 18th May 2010 at 12:34 by Stoggler
Yesterday evening, I discovered that the house I live in is home to a pair of nesting swifts.

I was just walking back to the house at about 8pm and was watching some swifts circling above the street and houses. Standing by my front door, I was merrily watching a pair flying about above me. Suddenly, one of them dived down and levelled off heading towards me. Mild panic was quickly replaced by sheer excitement and fascination as it and its partner shot up into the eaves right above...
