Having recently rediscovered the joys of birding for the first time since I was a wee lad, this is my record of getting to grips with re-familiarising myself with the world of birds.

My best day yet!

Posted Monday 26th April 2010 at 10:10 by Stoggler
Saturday was without a doubt my best day's birding ever, both in terms of numbers of species seen and in what I saw. In the one day I saw as many birds as I usually see in an average month, and in the course of the day I got three new lifers, nine new year list ticks, and five new ticks for my Sussex life list - all in all a very productive day.

It was a beautiful day weatherwise with hardly a cloud in the sky and a gentle breeze, and warm enough to dispense with the jacket by mid-morning....

A fine spring Saturday

Posted Monday 15th March 2010 at 10:37 by Stoggler
Spring really does feel as though it's here now. Saturday was a lovely day with some sunshine and it starting to feel a bit warmer (at long last!), and the birds really helping it to feel very springlike.

Saturday morning was spent at Pagham Harbour, in the North Wall and Lagoon areas. Along with the usual wildfowl (teal, 100s of wigeon, mallards, tufties, pintails, and a few shovelers) and waders (redshank, curlews, lapwings, black-tailed godwits, grey plover), I saw four buzzards...

A Saturday birding

Posted Monday 8th March 2010 at 15:22 by Stoggler
Following a quiet birding month in February (see my last post), I got out on Saturday for a full day's birding. The morning was spent at Pagham Harbour and the place was awash with birds.

It was low tide so perhaps a lot of waders were not around, but there were a number of Redshanks about, a single Grey Plover, as well as a few Curlews. The fields just to the north of the North Wall still have ample water in them which had a few hundred Wigeon, a good number of Teal (plus the...

Pagham, Chi, and Arundel

Posted Monday 25th January 2010 at 10:09 by Stoggler
With the bad weather and then a nice bout of gastro-enteritis knocking me out of action for over a week, I had not been out birding since the 2nd of January. My poor bins were starting to gather a layer of dust and were crying for some attention.

Well now that my stomach had finally started to behave itseld again (is that too much information!?), I had a fantastic day on Saturday in West Sussex.

Dropping the lass off for work in Pagham early in the morning, I quickly...

At long last, 100 species. And beyond...!

What a weekend! A Friday off work, an early-morning journey down to Littlehampton to get over to West Beach, and some lovely restful birding. Low tide, no wind, sunny with a bit of a chill in the air, hardly anyone else on the beach - perfect!

It was right on low tide when I arrived with nothing much apart from gulls and the odd oystercatcher, but things started hotting up once the tide came in. But before that, my attention was caught by getting on for 200 geese landing in a...
