Colin's Bird Diary - 17th October 2007

Wednesday.

Ashleworth Ham Nature Reserve - Sunny after heavy overnight rain, temp 13deg C at 0830 in light northerly breeze.

The wildfowl numbers are starting to pick up as winter nears with 28 Mallard and 2 Teal on the scrape along with a Grey Heron in the rhine. A Blackcap was in the hedge opposite the hide. A large flock of 80 geese flew south in the distance to the east. These were probably some of the local Canada Geese but they were too far away for a positive...

Colin's Bird Diary - 16th October 2007

Tuesday.
Slimbridge - Mild and overcase morning with rain starting at 1300 and was continuously heavy all afternoon.

There was quite a bit of disturbance around the reserve with routine maintenance such as hedge cutting. Nevertheless, 46 Wigeon were on the scrape in front of the Holden Tower and 10 Little Egrets were on the estuary with 8 of them together. On the raptor front, a Sparrowhawk went through and 2 Buzzards were feasting on something on the Dumbles and the resident...

Sunday.
Nagshead - Overcast, mild and calm.
I walked around the RSPB reserve this morning and up to Milkwall. Noticable was much Raven activity. They were flying back and forth over the far end of the long trail north-south and also across the Parkend - Coleford road several times.

Saturday.
Ashleworth Nature Reserve - Overcast, mild, misty and calm.

The vegetation around the scrape and in front of the hide has been cut. Unusually for this site, there was a Cormorant on the scrape and the two resident Canada Geese were feeding on the newly cut short sward. A group of 30 Wigeon overflew to the south and a pair of Stonechats were worthy of note near Colways Farm. Finally, the first Redwings for me at this site flagged up when 3 were noted in a large...
