Big, fat & beautiful! (Anguis fragilis)

While I was eating my lunch (it was near sunset), I saw smoke coming from the other side of the hill opposite our vacation cottage. Fearing that it was another fire that got out of control (we helped put out one that was on the hill side towards us a couple of weeks before- a neighbour wasn't careful. We arrived with the firemen). I immeadiately stopped eating, grabbed my herp equipment (knowing that there might be herps there, the equipment also proved useful in firefighting duties) and went to investigate. By the time it took me to pass 2/3 of the distance to the location where I saw smoke, the fire was obviously out, meaning that it wasn't nothing serious, so I don't have to go see what it was. There was a pile of pipes a couple of meters from me, so I thought:"Well, I'm already here... might as well check it out."

I started moving towards the pile and... something brown and fat started moving in the grass in front of me! "Wow! That must be a very big snake!"
As it stopped, it turned its head towards me and- blinked! "A Slow Worm? That fat???"
Yep, it was a Slow Worm, the fattest one I've ever seen! He was fatter than my thumb, which makes him around 3 cm in width! He was about 55 cm long and had a very nasty attitude (even tried to bite once!).

Talk about an interesting April Fool's Day!
