Devil Crayfish (Cambarus diogenes)

Was lining up on a app. 10 inch long water snake when this devil crayfish came crawling out of water just inches away. Irresistable beauty was compelling reason to photograph. They build a disinctive chimney shaped den of mud. Sure many folks have seen. Providing sustenance for many waders passing through currently. App. 3 inches (75mm) long

Well spotted and captured Bill. Ugly looking things aren't they, well they are covered in mud LOL.

Used to catch these in and about the local creeks when I was just a littlin' . Brings back memories of simpler days! Thanks.

P.S. By the way, we call 'em "crawdads" where I come from. Or at least that's what we kids used to call 'em!

Thanks everyone, waders are going bonkers for them currently.
Frank and I must of grown up in same neighborhood, we call them crawdads too.
Is there a latin word for crawdad? Be a new unofficial taxa.

Thanks EW. The way Greater yellowlegs are eating these things up, birds will be casually "strolling" up your way.
