Gongshan Muntjac doe

Gongshan Muntjac doe (Muntiacus gongshaniensis)

  • BIJ
This was an extremely rare find. Gongshan Muntjac are limited to a small mountain range, Gaoligongshan Mts. in Western Yunnan, China and two small isolated populations in SE Xizang (Tibet). Their population numbers are probably limited to a few hundred, but little is known of this species. They are crepuscular but this animal appeared on the Gongshan to Kondang road late afternoon, on the West side of the tunnel at about 2000m alt.
As far as I know this is the only daylight photograph of a wild Gongshan Muntjac. The animal in the Shanghai zoo is a Black Muntjac, pale morph, not a Gonghan Muntjac as listed

Yes , lovely indeed. And seeing the guardrail in the background gives me an idea of its vulnarability. Thank you for showing.
