Green Backed Heron
This weekend was an exciting one, I stumbled across this Green-Backed Heron at my local nature reserve, a species that is very rarely seen in the province, while common in the north-eastern parts of South Africa this was the first record of this species in the province since 2010, the next day there was a small but dedicated group of twitchers after I passed the word on to the guy who runs the South African Rare Bird news network. Unfortunately even bracing the cold winter rain for hours didn't result in another sighting of this skittish guy.
