Grey-headed Woodpecker (Picus canus)

I spent hours sitting in the rain over many days before I was able to see enough of this Grey-headed Woodpecker to make a sketch and then this painting.
Location
Deluz, nr Besanon, France
Date taken
May 2005
Scientific name
Picus canus
Equipment used
acrylic, and an umbrella would have been useful for watching the bird!
thanks, I'm still waiting to see another one of these. It's a species I'd love to paint again, and again. Sadly they're quite rare in my region now and the most difficult to see, after 3 toed of course.

Here too the grey-headed is the most uncommon and discret woodpecker. But it's possible to see it relatively easily,Nick:not any bird reply more kindly to my imitations of his song-in march and april,in the beech and oak futaies where it lives. He approaches progressively and finally comes very close, not specially shy, only curious and intrigued. It's always a great experience for me.
