Midland Smooth Softshell Turtle (Apalone mutica mutica)

Felt fortunate to catch as turtle completed egg laying and was retreating to water. Not the best shot by any means. Hopefully can improve in near future, most active part of season for them currently. Truly a primordial looking animal to encounter. Carapace resembles and feels like leather, very pliable.

Riverine
Location
Mississippi River
Date taken
05/02/2012
Scientific name
Apalone mutica mutica

Nice capture of this interesting turtle, Bill. And it got excellent camouflage on this sandy beach too!

Thanks for looking EW, Delia. Those things are ornery, mean streak is actually one and a half miles wide. Make our alligator snappers seem good natured.
