sandwich terns #4
Correction of text on Sandwich Tern #2, and reason why is shown in this photo. Yesterday, April 20, 2008 I posted a photo that I described as mating behavior. Closely examining the dozens of photos of the Terns behavior taken yesterday shows that this was actually an adult feeding a very large juvenile. The puffed up feathers, the awaiting open mouth, and the fish (a shad), and the eating of the fish, disprove the mating idea. This photo here shows what I observed with the real mating ritual. Here the male presents the fish to the female (invariably a glass minnow). If she accepts it, she takes it, but does not immediately eat it.
