Great image showing a characteristic piece of moorhen behaviour. This is actually an older sibling of the baby chick from a previous brood (same year). The older brothers and sisters stay around and help their parents bring up the latest brood of youngsters.
Adult moorhens have red and yellow bills and are much darker in body colour than these first year birds.
Excellent photograph.
 
Timwooten: Thanks for the info. I was having difficulty reconciling what I know to be the standard moorhen coloration with the behavior. The size of the "sibling" was also confusing. I've noticed that there are other examples of immature birds that actually seem larger than the adults, especially the terns, and in this case I think that holds true as well. regards~Bill
