Brown Shrikes are back
Brown Shrike (18cm).

I heard my first Brown Shrike of the season this morning. It was in the thick bush next to the rice paddy and I couldn't get a view of it. I didn't want to go closer in case I scared it off. I'll wait for it to get hungry and it will start hawking insects in the open and I'll have a good view then.

Large numbers of Brown Shrike migrate through and winter on Taiwan. They tend to return to the same territory each winter and stay there until late March. Each autumn I look forward to the return of the shrike to the rice paddy outside our house. I don't know if the shrike I heard this morning is just a migrant passing through or if it's going to be spending the winter. Here's a shot from last winter. This chap had his territory around our house last winter and I caught him hawking insects just outside my study window.

Nice shot,I notice a slight difference on colours of this Brown Shrike than the one we usually seen in our country,Mark. I've also seen several Brown Shrikes for last few weeks with many Grey Wagtails and waders,I hope this coming winter will be as good as last winter.
