Black Bear cub

Black Bear cub (Ursus americanus)

Two-year-old Black Bear cub cooling off in the grass of the greenbelt behind my home. One of three cubs of a cinnamon sow who raised them in this greenbelt and which I photographed two years in a row. This guy laid there "boofing" at me the whole time I was shooting him (her?) but was otherwise unbothered by my presence.
Habitat
Mixed conifer/riparian
Location
Pine Mountain, CA, USA
Date taken
2009
Scientific name
Ursus americanus
Equipment used
Canon Rebel XT, 300mm lens
Thanks very much, Julie and Airmile! It was a lucky grab, that's for sure. Its sibling was just out of frame sitting in one of the streams that runs through this greenbelt. I'll post that pic shortly as well. I feel very privileged to have been able to photograph the same family two summers in a row. Their behaviors and vocalizations are truly fascinating.

Aren't greenbelts wonderful? Thanks for sharing the info and the photo, splendid capture as well.

Thanks, Christine and Lisa! Actually, this is one of three cubs who, along with Mom, came trooping up out of the greenbelt the previous year one evening just after sunset and traipsed right through my back "yard", between my house and the neighbor's, through my front yard, and across the street to another greenbelt one street over. I'll see if I can find that shot of the four of them just as they topped the slope of my property and the greenbelt, which was only about 20' from my 15-foot-high deck.
