Mutant black-billed magpie in 2013 (Pica hudsonia)

This unusual magpie has nested in a large spruce tree in our front yard for the past couple of years. A local naturalist suggested that she has the same kind of genetic mutation that leads to fancy chickens and pigeons. Her offspring have a similar but less extreme appearance that varies from individual to individual.
